Centre Launches Smart National Mobility Card Initiative (1 September 2015)
Center launches Smart National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) model, an EMV Open Loop Card with stored value. NCMC will be an interoperable card to enable seamless travel by different metros and other transport systems besides retail shopping and purchases.
Paycraft Solutions is a preferred partner for services and consulting to support the creation, development and implementation of the Open Loop EMV specs for Card based payments in the mobility, transit and toll space.
Along with NPCI, Axis Bank, KMRL, BMTC, Paycraft is working to support the roll out of the EMV based open loop payments system for mobility across mass urban transport and metro plans.
Mr. Sreedharan's views on Kochi metro ticketing
The fast-paced construction of metro rail projects in many cities, however, does not eliminate a fundamental problem facing the commuter. Multiple authorities govern each segment of a passenger’s daily travel, and they don’t work together. As a result, there are not enough buses; taxis and auto rickshaws are poorly regulated and unauthorised operators are often in the fray. Also, Intelligent Transportation Systems relying on IT are absent and city managers have no accountability. So, will metro rail systems spark a change?
They can, says Mr. Sreedharan, citing the example of Kerala. Kochi, he says, will introduce a travel card, for use on buses, Kochi Metro, and boat services. It will be a smart card valid even in supermarkets. “This system is available in Korea and Japan, and it can be easily brought in here. No new technology needs to be developed,” he adds.
That optimism will depend on the State government’s commitment, since a similar effort did not take off in Delhi where “cooperation was not forthcoming”.
